Ring Light vs Softbox: Which Is Better for Live Selling?
Differences in light quality, space and budget — with a suggested setup for every stage.
Live selling needs a bright face and accurate product colour. The two most popular lights — ring light and softbox — shine in different ways.
Ring light
- Compact, one-minute setup, friendly price.
- Light falls straight on the face: smooth skin and the signature round catchlight.
- Best for close-ups, makeup, cosmetics and phone-based selling.
Softbox
- Soft, wide light that evenly covers both you and the product table.
- Needs more space and is usually used in pairs.
- Best for full-body fashion, homeware and product videos.
Suggested setups
- Starting out: one 13–18 inch ring light on a tall stand, plus a wireless lavalier mic.
- Live every day: add a softbox for the background or product table.
- Studio: two large softboxes and lights with CRI 95+.
Do not forget audio: viewers forgive slightly dim video far more than crackly sound.
